Charts

While Publisher boasts many powerful features in order to add objects from the User Interface (UI), it can be challenging to know and locate the exact features in back-end, necessary to format your chart the way you picture it in your mind.

Pie Chart Column Chart Line Chart Area Chart Doughnut Chart

Pie Chart

Pie Charts are circular diagrams divided into sectors. These charts are useful when demonstrating proportions. For example, it can demonstrate the usage to effectively provide a visual representation of the percentage of retail sales by each sales territory.

xc:root

This is the top node in an xChart document. Typically, this element contains the declaration of 'xChart' namespace xmlns:xc="http://www.ecrion.com/2018/xc". A document can range from an empty fragment (no content inside xc:root) to a complex, deeply nested collection of xChart, XSL-FO and SVG elements. It can be inserted in XSL-FO via the fo:instream-foreign-object tag.

Column Chart

Column charts are useful for comparing data points in one or more data series. This type of chart is also known as bar chart. You can use a clustered column chart when you want to compare values across X-axis (the Category Axis) or stacked column charts when you have multiple data series and you want to emphasize the total.

Line Chart

A line chart is a chart that displays a series of data points which are connected by straight line segments. These charts are useful for examining trends among data and also displaying comparisons of trends over different data groups. For example, both Internet Sales and Retail Sales are displayed over the span of four years to capture trends and spikes in sales totals.

Doughnut Chart

Doughnut is very similar to the Pie Chart, both divided into segments such that the arc of each segment represents a proportional value of each piece of data. For example, you could use a doughnut chart to plot survey questions with a small number of answers or other data where categories are limited.

CSS

Publisher supports CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for customizing your template documents. The styling is done similar to HTML, elements assign IDs via "id" attribute and classes via "class" attribute. The difference between the two attributes is that while there cannot exist duplicated IDs in the same document, the same class can be applied to multiple elements.

The XML view of your document template allows expressing external stylesheets, insofar the available CSS attributes are limited. XSL Stylesheet processor accepts an XML document and adds to it a stylesheet (CSS file) to express users' intentions about how the structured content should be presented.

In addition, it specifies the direction of table column layout, the direction of horizontal overflow, and the position of an incomplete last line in a block in case of 'text-align: justify'.

unicode-bidi

Because the Unicode algorithm has a limit of 61 levels of embedding, care should be taken not to use 'unicode-bidi' with a value other than 'normal' unless appropriate. In particular, a value of 'inherit' should be used with extreme caution. However, for elements that are, in general, intended to be displayed as blocks, a setting of 'unicode-bidi: embed' is preferred to keep the element together in case display is changed to inline

The attribute is a presentation attribute defining the opacity of the paint server (color, gradient, pattern, etc.) applied to the stroke of a shape.

stroke-width

The attribute is a presentation attribute defining the width of the stroke to be applied to the shape.

stroke-linecap

The attribute is a presentation attribute defining the shape to be used at the end of open subpaths when they are stroked.

stroke-linejoin

The attribute is a presentation attribute defining the shape to be used at the corners of paths when they are stroked.

stroke-miterlimit

The attribute is a presentation attribute defining a limit on the ratio of the miter length to the stroke-width used to draw a miter join. When the limit is exceeded, the join is converted from a miter to a bevel.

stroke-dasharray

The attribute is a presentation attribute defining the pattern of dashes and gaps used to paint the outline of the shape.

stroke-dashoffset

The attribute is a presentation attribute defining an offset on the rendering of the associated dash array.

opacity

The attribute specifies the transparency of an object or of a group of objects, that is, the degree to which the background behind the element is overlaid.

font-family

The attribute indicates which font family will be used to render the text, specified as a prioritized list of font family names and/or generic family names.

font-size

The attribute refers to the size of the font from baseline to baseline when multiple lines of text are set solid in a multiline layout environment.

font-weight

The attribute refers to the boldness or lightness of the glyphs used to render the text, relative to other fonts in the same font family.

font-style

The attribute specifies whether the text is to be rendered using a normal, italic or oblique face.

font-selection-strategy

This attribute specifies the strategy to be followed for selecting a font based on these specified criteria.

text-anchor

The attribute is used to align (start-, middle- or end-alignment) a string of text relative to a given point.

letter-spacing

The attribute controls spacing between text characters, in addition to any spacing from other attributes.

text-decoration

The attribute works exactly like the CSS text decoration property except that it is an attribute. It sets the appearance of decorative lines on text.

text-shadow

The property adds shadows to text.

visibility

The attribute lets you control the visibility of graphical elements. With a value of "hidden" or "collapse" the current graphics element is invisible.

display

The attribute lets you control the rendering of graphical or container elements. It only affects the direct rendering of a given element, whereas it does not prevent elements from being referenced by other elements.

For example, setting "display: none" on a <path> element will prevent that element from getting rendered directly onto the canvas, but the <path> element can still be referenced by a <textPath> element.

baseline-shift

The attribute allows repositioning of the dominant-baseline relative to the dominant-baseline of the parent text content element. The shifted object might be a sub- or superscript.

clip-path

The presentation attribute defines or associates a clipping path with the element it is related to.

transform

The attribute defines a list of transform definitions that are applied to an element and the element's children.

Child Elements of SVG

The SVG element can enclose the following children:

a circle clipPath defs ellipse
stop g image line linearGradient
mask path pattern polygon polyline
radialGradient rect svg style switch
symbol text textPath tspan use

SVG Elements Definitions

<a>

The SVG element creates a hyperlink to other web pages, files, locations within the same page, email addresses, or any other URL.

Attributes for <a>
href

<circle>

The element is an SVG basic shape, used to create circles based on a center point and a radius.

Attributes for <circle>
cx cy r filter

<clipPath>

The element defines a clipping path. A clipping path is used/referenced using the clip-path property.

<defs>

The element is used to store graphical objects that will be used at a later time. Objects created inside this element are not rendered directly. To display them you have to reference them (with a <use> element, for example).

<ellipse>

The element is an SVG basic shape, used to create ellipses based on a center coordinate, and both their x and y radius.

Attributes for <ellipse>
cx cy rx ry filter

<stop>

The element defines the ramp of colors to use on a gradient, which is a child element to either the <linearGradient> or the <radialGradient> element.

Attributes for <stop>
stop-color stop-opacity offset

<g>

The element is a container used to group other SVG elements.

<image>

The element includes images inside SVG documents. It can display raster image (bitmaps) files or other SVG files.

Attributes for <image>
x y width height href filter preserveAspectRatio

<line>

The element is an SVG basic shape used to create a line connecting two points.

Attributes for <line>
x1 y1 x2 y2 filter

<linearGradient>

The element lets authors define linear gradients that can be applied to fill or stroke of graphical elements.

Attributes for <linearGradient>
gradientTransform x1 y1 x2
y2 href gradientUnits spreadMethod

<mask>

The element defines an alpha mask for compositing the current object into the background. A mask is used/referenced using the mask property.

<path>

The element is the generic element to define a shape. All the basic shapes can be created with a path element.

Attributes for <path>

<pattern>

The element defines a graphics object which can be redrawn at repeated x and y-coordinate intervals to cover an area.

Attributes for <pattern>
x y width height patternTransform
patternUnits patternContentUnits preserveAspectRatio href viewBox

<polygon>

The element defines a closed shape consisting of a set of connected straight line segments. The last point is connected to the first point. For open shapes see the polyline element.

Attributes for <polygon>
points filter

<polyline>

The element is an SVG basic shape that creates straight lines connecting several points. Typically a polyline is used to create open shapes as the last point doesn't have to be connected to the first point. For closed shapes see the polygon element.

<radialGradient>

The element lets authors define radial gradients that can be applied to fill or stroke of graphical elements.

Attributes for <radialGradient>
gradientTransform cx cy

<rect>

The element is a basic SVG shape that creates rectangles, defined by their corner's position, their width, and their height. The rectangles may have their corners rounded.

Attributes for <rect>
x y width height rx ry filter

<svg>

The <svg> element is a container that defines a new coordinate system and viewport. It is used as the outermost element of any SVG document but it can also be used to embed a SVG fragment inside any SVG.

<style>

The element allows style sheets to be embedded directly within SVG content. SVG's style element has the same attributes as the corresponding element in HTML.

<switch>

The element evaluates the attributes on its direct child elements in order, and then processes and renders the first child for which these attributes evaluate to true. All others will be bypassed and therefore not rendered.

<symbol>

The element is used to define graphical template objects which can be instantiated by a use element.

Attributes for <symbol>
viewBox preserveAspectRatio

<text>

The element defines a graphics element consisting of text. It's possible to apply a gradient, pattern, clipping path, mask, or filter to <text>, just like any other SVG graphics element.

Attributes for <text>
x y dx
dy dominant-baseline filter

<textPath>

In addition to text drawn in a straight line, SVG also includes the ability to place text along the shape of a path element. To specify that a block of text is to be rendered along the shape of a <path>, enclose the given text in a <textPath> element which includes an href attribute with a reference to a <path> element.

Attributes for <textPath>
href startOffset

<tspan>

Within a text element, text and font properties and the current text position can be adjusted with absolute or relative coordinate values by including a <tspan> element.

Attributes for <tspan>

<use>

The element takes nodes from within the SVG document, and duplicates them somewhere else.

Attributes for <use>
href mask x y width height filter
